Mexico

In 8th Grade my family and I got to drive down to Mexico over Christmas break to build houses for the people of Puerto PeƱasco. I remember not really wanting to spend my Christmas in a strange city with people who didn't even speak my language. It wasn't until the first day of working on the house that My view started to change.  I was helping tear The roof off of something I would barely consider a house. I tried to imagine myself living in a place like that. Afterwards we went to visit the people who live in an area termed the shanties. This experience was the real eye-opener for me. It was a 2 mile stretch where about 200 people live in complete shacks where one wall could be a mattress and the other a piece of cardboard if they were lucky. They had no electricity or running water and little to no food or clothing to keep them warm. We walked along the stretch and gave out blankets, food, coats, & toys for the kids since it was Christmas. I was surprised at how excited they were to receive even something as small as an orange.  As soon as we started handing things out, children and adults came running down the streets after us hoping to receive whatever we had. We Couldn't hand things out fast enough and we were worried that we would run out. A man in our group noticed A guy without shoes so he took off his own and gave them to him. I knew I couldn't change their situation but I felt like I wanted to give them anything I could. I noticed that even though these people had barely anything they were the most gracious and happy people I have ever met. All they wanted to do was give back by expressing their gratitude. These people helped to open my eyes and see that there is so much need in this world and even though these people don't have much they are so grateful for what they are given.

winning & losing

I could sit here and make a list of all I've lost

But I learned this the hard way,

one too many times....

like my weaknesses are strengths,

my losses are wins

because not everything you lose is a loss
